HARTFORD, Conn. – The Tufts women's tennis team took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, but couldn't hang on as Trinity won four of six singles matches to take a 5-4 win over the Jumbos.
Trinity, who was ranked #33 in the most recent ITA national rankings, moves to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Jumbos fall to 6-5 on the year, with a 2-2 conference mark. The Jumbos were ranked #19 in the most recent national rankings.
The Jumbos jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play, picking up wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Sophomores Alexa Meltzer and Chelsea Hayashi took on the Trinity duo of Emily Curtis and Vanja Babunski at No. 2 and picked up an 8-1 win. The score was the same at No. 3 doubles as first-years Aandrita Deb and Zoe Miller topped Katie Hawkins and Abby Barton.
The Bantams picked up a win at No. 1 doubles as Morgan Feldman and Melita Ferjanic topped Jumbo sophomores Jacqueline Baum and Conner Calabro, 8-1.
Jumbos won at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, but weren't able to win any others, giving the Bantams the 5-4 advantage. At No. 4 singles Baum topped Ania Aliev in two sets, 6-1, 6-0. The second Jumbo win came at No. 5 singles from Zoe Miller who topped Carolyn Simmer, 6-4, 6-0.
At No. 1 singles Meltzer fell to Ferjanic in two sets. Similarly, at No. 2 singles Calabro fell to Feldman in two sets, 6-2, 6-3. Hayashi took the courts at No. 3 singles, but wasn't able to top Babunski. The last Bantam win came at No. 6 singles from Curtis, who was able to edge Hannah Conroy, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
The Jumbos will be back in action on Monday when they host Amherst at home on the Voute Courts with a 4:00 pm scheduled start time.
