MEDFORD – The #19 Tufts women's tennis team had their work cut out for them on Monday, taking on third ranked Amherst on the Voute Tennis Courts at Tufts University. The visiting Jeffs took a 3-0 lead after doubles play, and moved to an 8-1 victory on the afternoon.
With the loss the Jumbos move to 6-6 on the year and 2-3 in NESCAC play. The Jeffs are 10-1 this year, with a perfect 4-0 record in conference play. The win was the tenth in the row for the visitors, who will next put that winning streak on the line when they take on top ranked Williams on Saturday.
Sophomores Alexa Meltzer and Conner Calabro took the courts at No. 1 doubles but were bested by Amherst's duo of Vickie Ip and Sue Ghosh. At No. 2 doubles Chelsea Hayashi and Jacqueline Baum were topped by Maddy Sung and Jackie Calla. The Jeffs took the 3-0 lead after rookies Aandrita Deb and Zoe Miller battled the Jeff pair of Safaa Aly and Sarah Monteagudo, but weren't able to pull out a win for the Jumbos.
The Jeffs won in the first through fifth positions in singles play, all in two sets. At No. 6 singles Miller earned a two set win for the Jumbos over Amherst's Claire Carpenter.
Meltzer faced off with Ip at No. 1 singles but wasn't able to top her Jeff counterpart. At No. 2 singles Calabro fell to Ghosh. First-year Lauren Louks, and Baum and Hayashi rounded out the Jumbos singles line up at No. 3 through No. 5 singles, respectively.
The Jumbos will be back in action when they travel to take on local rival Wellesley on Friday before hosting Connecticut College on Saturday and traveling to take on top ranked Williams on Sunday.
