First-year Zoe Miller won by shutout in #5 singles |
MEDFORD - The 19th ranked Tufts women's tennis team nearly blanked Connecticut College, 8-1, for a NESCAC victory Saturday afternoon at Voute Courts.
The Jumbos swept the three doubles matches and then won five straight in singles play before the Camels broke up the shutout with a victory in the #1 match. Tufts is now 8-6 overall and 3-3 in the league while Connecticut College dropped to 8-11 and 1-5 in NESCAC.
Tufts breezed through doubles, with the #1 pair of sophomores Alexa Meltzer and Conner Calabro coming off the court first with an 8-3 win over Adrieene Sieverding and Aleksandra Drljaca. The #3 match was tilted even more towards the Jumbos with an 8-1 final by first-years Zoe Miller and Aandrita Deb. Tufts completed the sweep at #2 where first-year Lauren Louks and sophomore Jacqueline Baum won 8-4.
The Jumbos secured the victory with wins by Miller and Baum in singles. Miller rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 final at #5 and Baum was equally impressive at #4 with a 6-1, 6-0 score.
Calabro (6-0, 6-3) at #2, Louks (6-2, 6-2) at #3 and first-year Hannah Conroy (4-6, 6-3, 10-7) in the sixth spot also earned victories for Tufts. Drjaca took the lone Camel win against Meltzer on the first singles court 6-4, 7-5.
Tufts turns around and travels out to Williams for another NESCAC match tomorrow at 11 am. The Camels are off until hosting Hamilton next Saturday at 10 am.
