WILLIAMSTOWN - The Williams College women's tennis team, ranked #1 in the nation, had an impressive performance in shutting down Tufts today in a NESCAC match, 9-0.
A solid Jumbo team, which is ranked #19 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Associaton poll, was no match for the Ephs. The hosts lost just two games in three doubles matches and 15 games in six singles matches.
Maria Pylypiv and Julia Cancio took the #1 doubles match by an 8-1 score over Jumbos Alexa Meltzer and Conner Calabro.
In singles, the closest match came at #4 where Williams' Mia Gancayco won 6-2, 6-3 against Tufts' Jacquline Baum. No other Jumbo won more than three games in their singles match.
The victory improved the Ephs to 16-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference. The Jumbos dropped to 8-7 and 3-4.
Entering the final week of the regular season, Williams hosts Bowdoin next Saturday at 10 am. Bowdoin will host Tufts first, with the Jumbos final regular-season match taking place on Thursday in Maine at 3:30 pm.
