MEDFORD – The #30 Tufts men's tennis team made it five in a row on Wednesday afternoon with a 7-2 win over visiting NESCAC rival and #20 ranked Bates on the Voute Tennis Courts. The Jumbos swept singles play and then took four of six singles matches to earn their fourth conference win of the season.
The Jumbos (8-6, 4-3 NESCAC) have one more match on their schedule before tournament play begins. The Bobcats are now 9-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play with two conference matches remaining on their schedule.
The Jumbos swept doubles play to open up the match. At No. 1 doubles junior Nik Telkedzhiev and rookie Rohan Gupte topped the Bates duo of Pierre Planche and Christopher Ellis, 8-3. The match at No. 2 doubles was won by the same score as junior Nick Cary and sophomore Benjamin Battle beat Henry Lee and Patrick Ordway. At No. 3 doubles rookies Zain Ali and Griffin Brockman won over Ben Rosen and Adam Schwartz, 8-4.
In singles play the Jumbos won in the first through fourth positions. At No. 1 singles Telkedzhiev beat Planche, 6-4, 6-1. Gupte took the courts at No. 2 singles and topped Ellis, 6-3, 7-6. At No. 3 singles Ali brought home a two set win over Schwartz, 6-2, 6-0. The last Jumbo win came at No. 4 singles from Battle as he was able to win over Brent Feldmen, 6-3, 6-4.
The Bobcats were able to pick up wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Rosen gave the visitors a win at No. 5 singles, coming back after losing the first set to top the Jumbos' Jacobson, 6-7, 6-3, 10-2. At No. 6 singles junior Jay Glickman was bested by Ordway to give the Bobcats their second win.
The Jumbos take the courts again on Friday when they travel to Bowdoin for a 1:00 pm contest. Bates will be back in action on Friday as well when they travel to Amherst.
