| Hannah Conroy picked up her first collegiate win on Friday against Colby |
WATERVILLE, Maine – The Tufts women's tennis team swept doubles play and used that lead to cruise to an 8-1 win over Colby in Maine on Friday afternoon. The win was the Jumbos first conference match this spring and was played indoors because of snow still on the courts outside.
Playing in the first doubles position together for the first time this season sophomores Conner Calabro and Jacqueline Baum edged the Colby pair of Holly Bogo and Erica Talamo, 8-6. At second doubles sophomores Alexa Meltzer and Chelsea Hayashi were able to earn an 8-2 win over the Mules' Maddie Lupone and Danielle Levine. The third Jumbo win came at third doubles from the pair of first-year Zoe Miller and sophomore Hannah Conroy, who earned an 8-1 win over Anne Morris and Olivia Stein.
With the 3-0 lead the Jumbos were able to take five of six singles matches to earn the convincing 8-1 win. Meltzer played at first singles for the first time this year and picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win over Talamo. Calabro moved down to second singles and had little trouble with Bogo, winning in two sets (6-1, 6-2).
At fourth singles, Baum earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Levine. Things at fifth singles were similar, as Miller was able to win in two sets over Katie Ryan, 6-1, 6-0. The last Jumbo win came from sophomore Hannah Conroy who downed Jamie Au, 6-1, 6-3.
The lone Mule win came at third singles, where Lupone was able top Hayashi in two sets, 6-4, 6-1.
The Jumbos move to 5-3 on the year, and will be back in action on Saturday when they stay in Maine but travel to Bates for a 10:30 am contest with the Bobcats. The Mules are 5-9 this year and will play again when they take on Trinity on April 19.
