Zoe Miller picked up a win in singles play for the Jumbos against Wesleyan |
MEDFORD – In a match forced indoors because of cold temperatures and sleet, the Wesleyan women's tennis team used a 3-0 lead after doubles play to secure a 5-4 win over the Jumbos in NESCAC tennis action Wednesday afternoon in the Hirsh Tennis Center. The loss was the first conference loss of the season for the Jumbos.
With the win the Jumbos are now 6-4 overall with a 2-1 NESCAC mark. The Cardinals move to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play on the season, and have won six of their last seven matches.
Wesleyan's duo of Dasha Dubinsky and Aashli Budhiraja topped Jumbo rookie Zoe Miller and sophomore Hannah Conroy, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles for the first win for the Cardinals. Next to finish was the match at No. 2 doubles, as sophomores Alexa Meltzer and Chelsea Hayashi fell to Nicole McCann and Anna Howard, 8-5. At No. 1 doubles the Cardinals secured their third win, with sophomores Conner Calabro and Jacqueline Baum getting bested by Eudice Chong and Helen Klass-Warch.
The Jumbos were able to win four of the six singles matches, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Cardinals. Wesleyan opened up singles play with a win by Budhiraja over Jumbo rookie Lauren Louks in two sets to take a 4-0 lead. The visitors were able to secure the win as the next to finish was Chong at No. 1 singles, who topped Meltzer in two sets to give the Cardinals five wins.
At No. 2 singles Calabro battled Klass-Warch, but was able to walk away with a win, 7-6(5), 6-3. The Jumbos also won in the No. 4 through No. 6 singles positions as Hayashi, Baum and Miller all won over their Cardinal counterparts.
Wesleyan will be back in action on Sunday when they host conference rival Williams for a 10:30 am start. The Jumbos will continue battling conference opponents as they travel to Trinity on Saturday for a 12:00 pm match with the Bantams.
