DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Tufts volleyball team picked up a non-conference win over Western Connecticut on Saturday afternoon playing at UMass-Dartmouth. Senior Maddie Kuppe was the offensive leader for the Jumbos with 13 kills, while first-year MacKenzie Bright turned in 12 kills in the three set win.
The Jumbos are now 6-3 overall and following the conclusion of their match with the Colonials, they took on host UMass-Dartmouth. With the loss the Colonials move to 8-7 on the season. They also took on UMass-Dartmouth earlier in the day, picking up a three set win against the Corsairs.
The Jumbos played the closest of the three sets in the first one, topping the Colonials 25-23. The second set was also close but saw the Jumbos win 25-20. The Jumbos used their largest margin of victory in the third set, as they picked up a 25-18 win.
Kuppe had 13 kills with a .303 hitting percentage, adding eight digs, four aces and two blocks. Bright's 12 kills came with a remarkable .632 hitting percentage. Junior Elizabeth Ahrens finished with nine kills and a .421 hitting percentage, adding two blocks. Senior Kyra Baum and first-year Angela Yu ran the offense, finishing with 16 and 15 assists, respectively.
Defensively for the Jumbos senior co-captain Carolina Berger had 25 digs, while Baum had seven and sophomore Alex Garrett finished with six.
For the Colonials Karissa Smith had 14 kills and ten digs. Brittany Steele finished with seven kills and ten digs. Danielle Kaminsky took care of the setting, collecting 23 assists and also adding 17 digs. Jaqueline Kanuk, Cali Holt and Steele all finished with two blocks.
The Colonials will be back in action on Friday when they host Salve Regina for a 7 pm start. The Jumbos play again when they host UMass-Boston on Thursday night with a scheduled 7 pm start at Cousens Gym.
