Men's Soccer Blanks No. 15 UMass-Boston, 1-0, in the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday

MEDFORD, Mass. – Junior midfielder Dexter Eichhorst tallied his first career game-winner in the 68th minute for the Tufts University men's soccer team during a 1-0 victory over No. 15 UMass-Boston in the third round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday at Bello Field in Medford, Massachusetts. 

Eichhorst's goal, which came from just inside the 18-yard box, was his second of the season and the fifth of his career. The Jumbos (12-5-2, 6-2-2 in NESCAC) will play either No. 3 Trinity University (Texas) or No. 5 Kenyon College in quarterfinal-round action of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday (1 p.m.) at Bello Field. The Beacons (18-2-3, 5-1-1 in Little East Conference), who have qualified for the NCAA Tournament in three consecutive seasons, see their season come to an end, as they defeated Kean University, 3-0, in the first round and No. 13 Haverford College, 1-1, (4-2 PKs) in the second round.

"As a Division III program that has aspirations of being a really successful program, this is the stage you want to get to," said seventh-year head coach Josh Shapiro. "We are thrilled to have been here three years in a row now, and we are thrilled to get the opportunity to play again tomorrow. To get a home NCAA game at Tufts University and see the crowd come out the way they did and support us was a fantastic thing. I think our guys relished that opportunity to play in front of our home crowd. It was a great day to be a Jumbo."

Jumbos senior goalkeeper Scott Greenwood (11-4-1) made two saves, as he posted his 10th shutout of the season and his third consecutive in the NCAA Tournament. The Weymouth, Massachusetts, native has a program-leading 37 career shutouts. Freshman goalkeeper Omar Castro-Dreher (13-2-2) posted six saves, as he was tagged with the loss for the Beacons. Senior captain and forward Nathan Majumder posted a game-high five shots, while sophomore midfielder/forward Mohamed Kenawy recorded a team-high four shots for the visitors. 

The Jumbos held a 21-16 advantage in shots, including holding a 14-7 lead in the category during the second half. The Jumbos were whistled for 15 fouls, while the Beacons were guilty of nine infractions. The Jumbos attempted six corner kicks, while the Beacons were awarded a pair. 

The Beacons applied a great deal of pressure during the 13th and 14th minutes, as a header shot by freshman back Destin Pierrot was saved by Greenwood in the 13th minute. Junior back Marcelo Cunha fired a shot during the 14th minute and then 10 seconds later junior forward Giovanni Lima tallied a shot but neither attempt was on target. 

Senior captain and midfielder Zach Halliday fired a shot in the 21st minute, but the attempt was blocked. Sophomore midfielder/forward Guilherme Barbosa's shot in the 22nd minute for the Beacons was blocked. In the 24th minute, Kenawy drove a shot wide left of the net. 

The Beacons nearly found their way onto the scoreboard in the 29th minute, as a free kick by Cunha hit the crossbar. Freshman midfielder Zach Lane recorded a header shot in the 33rd minute, but it was turned aside by Castro-Dreher. During the 34th minute, a header shot by Majumder traveled over the net. 

Castro-Dreher tallied saves for the Beacons in the 41st minute on a header by Majumder and in the 44th minute on a shot by Halliday, as the game remained scoreless heading into halftime. The Beacons held a 9-7 advantage in shots during the first half, while each squad was guilty of five fouls in the opening half. 

The Jumbos attempted to take a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute, but senior midfielder Kevin Lawson's shot was saved by Castro-Dreher. Majumder had a strong chance in the 64th minute, but Casro-Dreher saved the attempt from point-blank range. 

The Beacons attempted to even the score in the 69th minute, but Kenawy's shot went wide left. A shot by senior back/forward Edmilson Barros of the Beacons in the 71st minute was blocked. Freshman midfielder/forward Gavin Tasker posted a shot in the 77th minute, but it was denied by Castro-Dreher. Kenawy posted a shot in the 79th minute, but the Jumbos' defense was able to block the attempt. 

Greenwood made his final save of the game in 87th minute, as he turned aside a shot by senior back Pedro De Carvalho.
