Men's Swimming & Diving Garners Third-Place Honors with 1,044 Points at the MIT Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Zachary Wallace tallied a first-place finish and a program-best time of 1:51.45 in the finals of the 200-yard individual medley for the Tufts University men's swimming & diving team during third-day action at the MIT Invitational on Sunday in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with the Jumbos finishing the tournament in third overall out of five teams. 

Zachary Wallace set a program record each day at the MIT Invitational.

The Jumbos went over the 1,000-point plateau during the three-day tournament, as they finished with 1,044 points. The Jumbos cleared fourth-place Keene State by 557 points and trailed second-place New York University by 328 points. MIT finished first overall, as it earned 1,691 points. 

Junior James McElduff performed exceptionally all weekend, as the Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, native posted a trio of top-nine finishes during the final rounds of individual events, including the 200-yard IM (sixth overall, 1:55.83), the 200-yard butterfly (seventh overall, 1:54.42) and the 400-yard individual medley (ninth overall, 4:12.97). 

Sophomore Kingsley Bowen boasted a couple impressive performances, which came in the finals of the 100-yard backstroke (fourth overall, 50.04) and the 200-yard backstroke (fourth overall, 1:49.23), while senior captain Matt Rohrer placed second overall in the finals of the 1-meter diving event (329.65, 21 points) and the 3-meter diving event (310.95, 21 points). 

Sophomore Brandon Jinn earned a fourth-place finish in the finals of the 1650-yard freestyle (16:43.62, 19 points), while he also finished ninth overall in the 500-yard freestyle (4:47.93, 14 points). Wallace set a program record of 3:58.28 during the preliminaries of the 400 IM on Saturday, while also setting the Jumbos' program record in the 200-yard freestyle on Friday. The La Jolla, California, native, additionally, collected a third-place finish in the finals of the 400 IM (4:02.45).

Freshman Roger Gu continues to play a pivotal role for the Jumbos during his rookie season, as the Ashland, Massachusetts, native collected a fourth-place finish in the finals of the 100-yard freestyle (45.98, 19 points). 

Sophomore Noah Cagley was the Jumbos' top-performer, while finishing fourth overall during the finals of the 500 freestyle (4:44.15, 19 points). Sophomore Adon Shapiro placed sixth overall in the finals of the 1650 freestyle (17:04.25), while junior Lorenzo Lau finished eighth overall in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.63, 15 points). Freshman Alex Burnam placed 10th overall in the finals of 100-yard breaststroke (59.85, 13 points), senior captain Luca Guadagno placed 10th in the 400 IM (4:13.03, 13 points) and junior Craig Drennan finished 10th in the 1650 freestyle (17:34.21, 13 points). 

The Jumbos' boasted some impressive performances on Sunday, as Lau, Bowen, McElduff and Gu earned a third-place finish in the finals of the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:05.53, 40 points). Bowen, senior Jasper Du, Wallace and Gu formed the Jumbos' "A" team in the finals of the 200-yard medley relay, as the group boasted a fourth-place finish (38 points) with a time of 1:32.13. 

Burnam was the Jumbos' top-performer in the finals of the 200-yard breaststroke on Sunday, as the San Francisco, California, native clocked a time of 2:08.42, en route to finishing 12th overall and garnering 11 points. 

Junior Chris Flynn recorded an 11th-place finish (52.03, 12 points) during the finals of the 100-yard butterfly, which was the best time by any Jumbo in the event. Sophomore Ross Wood posted a pair of 11th-place finishes during the final day of the tournament, which came in the finals of the 500 freestyle (4:50.56, 12 points) and the 100 freestyle (48.34, 12 points). Freshman Michael Brunelli earned 12 points during the finals of the 1650 freestyle, by placing 11th overall with a time of 17:59.51.

The Jumbos will compete with Williams and WPI at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, on Saturday (Dec. 10).
