POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The No. 21 women's squash team picked up two more wins on Sunday afternoon to finish their first semester schedule with a perfect 7-0 record. The Jumbos topped Bard, 6-0, and then host Vassar, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon.
The 7-0 start is the best start in at least 15 years for the Jumbo women. They started 5-0 back during the 2000-01 season. The Jumbos were a perfect 4-0 this weekend including two wins over teams that were ranked just above them in the College Squash Association national rankings on Saturday.
Sunday started with a 6-0 win over Bard as the Jumbos won in the first six positions and matches were not played in the seven through ninth positions. Freshman Claire Davidson allowed her Raptor opponent to score just three points across three games to pick up an 11-1, 11-0, 11-2 win in the first position. In the second position classmate Catherine Shanahan was nearly as dominant with an 11-1, 11-4, 11-2 win over Francesca Keller. Fellow rookie Sahar Tirmizi took the courts in the third position and won easily over Audrey Hutchinson, 11-1, 11-0, 11-1.
In the fourth position sophomore Sinclair Meggitt was able to beat Nadia Russell in three games, 11-2, 11-3, 11-4. Freshman Katie Deveaux took on Christa Gammage in the fifth position, and won in three games, 11-3, 11-2, 11-2. The last Jumbo win came in the sixth position as sophomore Isabella Libassi was able to top Renad Bdair, 11-0, 11-2, 11-2.
After the win over the Raptors, the Jumbos took on the host Brewers, and that match was a lot closer with the Jumbos edging the Brewers, 5-4. Shanahan picked up her second win of the day with an 11-6, 11-0, 11-2 win in the second position over Jiamin Wu. Junior Lauren Banner picked up a three game win over Isabelle Bertram in the third position, 11-9, 11-8, 11-4.
In the fifth position Tirmizi won her fourth match of the weekend with a three game win over Cherylann Mucciolo, 11-0, 11-5, 11-7. Sophomore Chista Irani turned in a win for the Jumbos in the sixth position with a three game win over Alessandra Pilkington. The last Jumbo win came from Libassi in the ninth position, as she needed four games, but was able to beat Kelly Rissman, 11-3, 8-11, 11-5, 11-7.
In the first position sophomore Hannah Burns fell in four games to Hannah Nice, 11-6, 11-2, 9-11, 11-4. Sophomore Olivia Ladd-Luthringhauser lost a hard fought five game duel in the fourth position, 8-11, 11-4, 11-5, 6-11, 11-9. Meggitt wasn't able to win in the seventh position, falling in four games. Similarly in the eighth position Deveaux fell in four games to her Brewer opponent.
With the two wins the Jumbos improve to 7-0 and will now take a break for the holidays. The Jumbos take the courts again on January 13 with a trip to Wesleyan to take on the host Cardinals and Haverford.
