NEW HAVEN. Conn. – Playing their second match of the College Squash Association Team Nationals, the Jumbos fell to Hamilton, 7-2, on Saturday afternoon at Yale. Senior captain Paget Stanco and sophomore Lauren Banner were the two winners for the Jumbos against the Continentals.
The Jumbos are playing in the Walker Cup which features the No. 17 through No. 24 ranked teams in the country. The Jumbos had a strong final week to the season and moved up in the rankings to play in the higher division in the Team Championships.
Stanco needed five games but she was able to edge Rachel Newman in the first position, 11-4, 5-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-5. The second win for the Jumbos came from Banner in the fifth position, as she also needed five games to beat Grace Munschauer, 3-11, 12-10, 11-8, 6-11, 11-4.
In the second position rookie Zarena Jafry fell to Lindsay Arader in three close games, 11-9, 11-8, 12-10. Classmate Hannah Burns took her match in the third position to five games, but was edged by Rafiatou Ouro-Aguy, 4-11, 11-7, 11-8, 12-14, 11-9. In the fourth position, first-year Sahana Karthik fell in three games to Lillie Simourian, 11-5, 11-2, 11-5.
Taking the courts in the sixth position, Claudia Udolf won a game but ended up losing to Megan Grip, 11-7, 6-11, 11-7, 11-6. Freshman Sinclair Meggitt faced off with Charlotte Zonis in the seventh position, but fell 11-5, 11-6, 11-2. In the eighth position, freshman Chista Irani was bested by Katherine Bauer, 11-5, 11-6, 12-10. Sophomore Gabi Salomon rounded out the Jumbos line up in the ninth position, but was topped by Marina Hartnick, 11-2, 11-3, 11-4.
The Jumbos will face off with Wellesley in the final match of the Team Championships on Sunday at 1:30 pm. The Jumbos fell to the Blue earlier this semester, and will be looking to avenge that loss on Sunday.
