Box Score

MEDFORD - Senior tri-captain Alli Sciarretta and classmate Bridget Instrum both scored five goals as fourth-ranked Middlebury College earned a 17-9 win over #10 Tufts in a NESCAC women's lacrosse contest Saturday afternoon at Bello Field.

Freshman Megan Toner scooped up a game-high four groundballs

The visiting Panthers, who also received three goals each from senior tri-captain Laurel Pascal and junior Bea Eppler, improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the league.

Tufts (2-0, 0-1), which was opening its NESCAC schedule, was led by five goals from senior tri-captain Caroline Ross.

Middlebury scored the first six goals of the game, two each by Instrum and Eppler, to take a commanding lead just 11 minutes in. Junior Mary O'Connell assisted on two of the goals.

However, the Jumbos would score four of the next five goals to pull within three at 7-4 with 8:33 remaining until halftime. Ross had two of the goals and the Jumbos were back in the game.

Middlebury scored the final three of the half though and led 10-4 at the break. Back-to-back goals by Instrum got that spurt started.

Tufts stuck around with Ross scoring the first two goals of the second half making it 10-6. However, the Panthers always kept the Jumbos at an arm's length. They scored four of the next five goals, by four different players, and led 14-7 on a Pascal free-position shot with 16:39 on the second-half clock.

Senior tri-captain Brigid Bowser and Ross netted back-to-back goals for the Jumbos to bring the score to 14-9 Middlebury. The visitors finished off the win with three straight to close the game, two by Sciarretta.

O'Connell had four assists in the game for Middlebury, which earned a 34-22 advantage in shots. The Panthers also had a healthy 17-11 lead on draw controls including seven by Pascal. Senior goalie Katie Furber made six saves in the win.

Ross was the only Jumbo to finish with multiple goals. Sophomore Taylor Meek had a goal and an assist. Freshman Megan Toner scooped up a game-high four groundballs while freshman Dakota Adamec led Tufts with four draw controls. Freshman goalie Audrey Evers stopped 10 shots.

The Jumbos welcome #1 SUNY Cortland to Bello Field for non-league action on Wednesday at 4 pm. Middlebury stays overnight in Greater Boston and plays at MIT tomorrow at 2.
