CLAREMONT, CA - The Tufts University women's tennis team continued its strong start to the 2016 spring season on Tuesday with a solid 8-1 victory over 14th-ranked Chicago.
It's the second straight win over a top 20 team for the #22 ranked Jumbos. They defeated #19 Lewis and Clark on Monday 7-2.
Against Chicago, the Jumbos took two out of three in doubles and then swetp singles play for the convincing victory. Junior Conner Calabro, sophomores Zoe Miller and Lauren Louks, and freshmen Mina Karamercan and Tomo Iwasaki all won in singles and doubles.
Calabro and freshman Otilia Popa had the first win of the day in #2 doubles 8-4. The Maroons tied the team score at 1-1 with a #3 doubles win by Tiffany Chen and Stephanie Lee. Tufts would not lose again though, starting with Louks and Karamercan's 8-6 victory in #1 doubles.
The Jumbos would clinch the victory with wins in third, fifth and second singles. Calabro dominated at #3 6-0, 6-2. Miller was similarly efficient with her 6-4, 6-3 win on the fifth singles court. Karamercan, ranked 42nd in singles coming into the spring, defeated #20 Rachel Kim 7-6 (1), 6-2 to close out the win.
Louks, #30 in singles, had an impressive 6-2, 7-5 victory in the #1 match over Chicago's Ariana Iranpour, who is #4 in singles following the fall season. Junior Chelsea Hayashi and Iwasaki also play to three-set super tie-breaker wins for Tufts.
The Jumbos (3-0) finish their spring trip with a match at #3 Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday. Chicago (5-3) is off until the Midest Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin on April 1.
