Tomo Iwasaki won in both singles and doubles play for the Jumbos |
MEDFORD – The No. 14 Tufts women's tennis team hosted No. 28 Babson in their spring 2016 home opener on Thursday and the Jumbos picked up a commanding 9-0 win over the Beavers. After allowing just five games across three doubles matches, the Jumbos then won in two sets in all singles positions in a match that was held indoors at the Hirsch Tennis Center due to weather conditions.
The Jumbos moved up to No. 14 from No. 22 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings after a successful spring break trip. With the win they are now 4-1 this spring. With the set back the Beavers fall to 11-4 and have now lost three in a row with losses to Middlebury and MIT before they took on the Jumbos.
The Jumbos started out strong, picking up wins in all three doubles matches. In the number one spot sophomore Lauren Louks and freshman Mina Karamercan earned an 8-1 win over Eleni Gianelos and Jenny Quenard. The Jumbo duo of junior Conner Calabro and rookie Otilia Popa won in the second position, 8-2, over the Beaver pair of Kylie Kam and Chloe Brandt. The last doubles win came in the third spot for the Jumbos as sophomore Zoe Miller and freshman Tomo Iwasaki won by the same, 8-2, score over Claire Foster and Tori Paolino.
Singles play went very similar to doubles play as the Jumbos won in all six positions. In the number one position Louks topped Gianelos, 6-0, 6-3. The match in the second spot was decided by the same score as Karamercan topped Quenard. In the third spot, Calabro picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win over Paolino.
Iwasaki took the courts in the fourth spot and blew past Brandt, 6-1, 6-0. In the fifth position, Miller topped Foster, 6-1, 6-1. The last Jumbo win came in the sixth position as junior Jacqueline Baum earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kam.
The match is the first of three in three days at home for the Jumbos as they begin conference play by hosting Colby on Friday at 3:30 before Bates visits the Voute Courts on Saturday for a 10:30 am match.
