MEDFORD - The newly-ranked #14 in the country Tufts women's tennis team made quick work of Colby College in a NESCAC match Friday afternoon, winning 9-0.
Tufts did not lose a game in doubles play and lost a total of just eight games in the six singles matches. The Jumbos improved to 5-1 overall in winning their conference opener.
Colby fell to 8-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Tufts' #1 pair of Lauren Louks with Mina Karamercan, their #2 duo of Conner Calabro with Otilia Popa, and the #3 Jumbo team of Zoe Miller with Tomo Iwasaki all won their doubles matches by 8-0 scores.
The Jumbos were nearly as dominant in singles. Iwasaki was the first winner at #4 by 6-0, 6-1 scores. Calabro clinched the Jumbo victory with her 6-0, 6-1 win in the third match. Karamercan did not lose a game at #2.
Tufts finished off the shutout with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in sixth singles by Chelsea Hayashi, Miller's 6-2 and 6-0 final at #5, and lastly a 6-1 and 6-2 victory by Louks in the #1 spot.
The 9-0 win was the second in as many days for Tufts after the team opened its spring home schedule with a shutout of Babson on Thursday.
Louks is the #6-ranked singles player in the Northeast according to the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association release. Karamercan is #10 in the region. As a doubles pair they are ranked fifth in the Northeast.
Tufts continues a busy stretch with a home NESCAC match versus Bates College tomorrow at 10:30 am. Colby plays at Trinity tomorrow in a 2 pm start.
