MEDFORD - For the second straight match, the Tufts University women's tennis team defeated a national top 40 non-league foe 9-0 as the Jumbos won by shutout at Brandeis University on Saturday.
Head coach Kate Bayard's Jumbos, ranked 15th in the new ITA poll released earlier this week, had a 9-0 win over #31 Wellesley at home on Thursday. Today's shutout came against the #30 Judges.
The three Jumbo doubles wins were by Lauren Louks and Mina Karamercan at #1 (8-3), Conner Calabro with Otilia Popa at #3 (8-5), and Tomo Iwasaki with Jacqueline Baum at #3 (8-3).
Tufts clinched the team victory with singles wins by Tomo Iwasaki and Chelsea Hayashi. Both won by 6-2, 6-3 scores in the fourth and sixth singles matches, respectively.
Karamercan won by a similar scoring line of 6-3, 6-2 on the second singles court. Calabro took a 6-3, 7-5 victory in third singles. The #5 match went three sets with Tufts sophomore Zoe Miller coming back from down a set to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Louks finished off the shutout with a 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory in the top spot.
The Jumbos (9-3) are now off until Wednesday when they play at #5 Amherst College in a 4 pm match. Brandeis (7-7) hosts Trinity College tomorrow at 10 am.
