BRUNSWICK, Maine - The No. 16 Tufts University women's lacrosse team scored the first five goals of the game and never looked back in a 17-8 win over Bowdoin on the final day of the regular season Wednesday evening at Ryan Field.
The Jumbos (9-6, 5-5) secure the seventh seed for the upcoming NESCAC Tournament while Bowdoin (7-8, 2-8 NESCAC) misses out on the tourney.
Senior tri-captain Caroline Ross scored consecutive goals to spark Tufts' game-opening run. The visitors led 5-0 after 8:18 of play and, after a Megan O'Connor goal for Bowdoin, rolled off five more goals to extend their lead to 10-1.
Tufts carried a 12-2 lead into the break as freshmen Courtney Grygiel and Megan Toner scored in the final four minutes before intermission.
Bowdoin attempted to claw back into the contest, getting three goals from Hannah Hirschfeld in a 4-2 surge to open the second half, cutting the lead to 14-6. But the Jumbos answered with three straight to push the lead back to double-figures en route to the victory.
Senior tri-captain Brigid Bowser was outstanding for Tufts, scoring five goals with six draw controls and three ground balls. Tufts also got three goals and two assists from Ross, who also claimed six draws. Bowdoin was paced by three goals and an assist from Hirschfeld. Megan O'Connor had a pair of goals in the loss for the Polar Bears.
Audrey Evers made eight saves for Tufts while Kayli Weiss (three saves) and Erin Morrissey (four saves) each played a half for Bowdoin. Tufts owned a dominant edge in possession thanks to a 18-9 advantage in draw controls. The Jumbos out-shot Bowdoin 32-19
and converted 4-6 free position shots.
Tufts will travel to second-seeded Middlebury for the NESCAC Quarterfinals at noon Saturday. Bowdoin finishes its season with a record of 7-8, going 5-0 in non-conference games this spring.
