MIDDLETOWN, CT - The 11th-ranked Wesleyan University men's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 victory over #17 Tufts in a NESCAC match played indoors on Saturday.
The host Cardinals improved to 5-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Tufts suffered its first conference loss after three consecutive wins, as well as dropping to 8-3 overall.
Wesleyan swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead in the match. The middle tandem of Michael Liu and Steven Chen took an 8-2 win from Jumbos Nik Telkedzhiev and Griffin Brockman. The other two matches were 8-4 finals.
In singles, Chen, the 14th-ranked player in the nation, had a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Jumbo Jay Glickman. Joachim Samson was even more efficient for Wesleyan, losing just two games to Rob Jacobson in the #4 match. In #1 singles action, Liu was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Tufts sophomore Rohan Gupte.
The lone Tufts victory came in sixth singles where Danny Coran was a 6-2, 6-2 winner against Wesleyan's Michael King.
The Jumbos are back at it tomorrow with another challenging conference match as #3 Middlebury visits Medford in the Jumbos spring home opener. Wesleyan also plays tomorrow in a noon start at #9 Williams.
