MEDFORD, Mass. – The Tufts University men's swimming and diving team competed against the Coast Guard Academy today at home in their season-opener. The Jumbos took the team win with a score of 170-126.
The Jumbos had a first-place finisher in nine of the 16 events with Kingsley Bowen, Zach Wallace, and Roger Gu leading the way with three wins each. They were a part of the 400 medley relay team that took first with a time of 3:27.16 along with teammate Matthew Manfre.
In addition, Bowen came in first in the 100 and 200 backstrokes. His 50.54 win in the 100 back broke his own Hamilton Pool record. Wallace took the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley with times of 52.55 and 1:58.35, respectively. And Gu finished first in two freestyle events, the 50 and 100, with a 20.70 and a 46.83 touches, respectively.
Tufts swept the top three spots in the 200 freestyle with Tyler Tatro taking first with a 1:46.69 and Lomax Turner and Adon Shapiro taking second and third.
James McElduff was the first finisher in the 200 butterfly with a 1:55.65.
The 400 medley relay team of Bowen, Wallace, Gu, and Manfre set another a Hamilton Pool record in their race. Other pool record breakers include Gu's 50 free (20.70) and Chasse Sodemann of Coast Guard in the 100 breaststroke (58.13).
Coast Guard was led by junior Taylor Rowe and freshman Marshall Seguin, who both won a pair of events. Rowe was the top distance freestyler in the building with winning times of 10:00.65 in the 1,000 and 4:51.67 in the 500. Seguin was first in both diving events, scoring 246 in one-meter and 232.58 in three-meter.
The next action for the Jumbos will be tomorrow when they travel to Vermont to take on Middlebury at 1 p.m. Coast Guard is off until competing for the Connecticut Cup at Wesleyan on December 2.
