No. 19 Women's Squash Picks Up First Wins of Season Over Mount Holyoke and Hamilton

Rachel Windreich picked up her first two collegiate wins on Saturday.

BELMONT – In their 2017 home opener the No. 19 Tufts women's squash team knocked off No. 27 Mount Holyoke, 7-2, and No. 26 Hamilton, 8-1, on Saturday at the Belmont Hill School.

With the wins the Jumbos are now 2-1 overall this season. The setback was the first of the year for the Lyons (3-1).

The Jumbos started the day with a win over Mount Holyoke. Freshman Julie Yeung picked up her fist collegiate win in the No. 1 spot for the Jumbos, playing three close games with Brandy Williamson, but winning 11-8, 11-9, 11-8. Similarly in the fourth position classmate Rachel Windreich collected her first collegiate win with a three game win over Emily Chang, 11-9, 11-2, 11-4.

In the fifth position sophomore Catherine Shanahan allowed her Lyon counterpart to score just 11 points in her 11-2, 11-6, 11-3 win. Senior Lauren Banner was just as dominant in the No. 6 spot, allowing her Lyons opponent 14 points in her three game win (11-1, 11-4, 11-9). Sophomore Sahana Karthik had to overcome a loss in the first game to beat Kuzie Madungwe in the seventh position, 8-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-2. Junior captain Chista Irani was able to pick up a three game win in the eighth position over Tanishka Sachidanand, 11-4, 11-4, 11-4. Rounding out the Jumbos lineup was freshman Choloe Kantor who got her first college win in the nine spot.

The Jumbos closed their day with a 8-1 win over Hamilton. Yeung won her second of the day in the top position, making easy work of Rafiatou Ouro-Aguy, 11-6, 11-4, 11-5. Sophomore Claire Davidson won for the Jumbos in the second position, topping Caitlin Stern, 11-4, 11-4, 11-6. Windreich picked up her second win of the day in the fourth position, with a three game win over Liesl Guenther. Shanahan came back after losing the first game to win in four games in the fifth position, 6-11, 11-3, 11-2, 11-4. Banner played in the sixth position and once again won in three games, this time over Marina Hartnick, 11-6, 11-8, 13-11. Karthik played a four game match in the seven spot, losing the third game with Danielle Reisley, but still picking up the 11-5, 11-5, 8-11, 11-4 win. Irani played a long one in the eighth position, with the third game in her three game win needing extra points but Irani won it 17-15 to complete the 11-4, 11-4, 17-15 win over Lindsay Jadow. Kantor was dominant in the ninth position, allowing Molly Pivorotto just ten points in three games.

The Jumbos wrap up a busy weekend on Sunday with matches against Welleslay at 2 pm and Boston College at 6 pm. Mount Holyoke plays again on December 2 when they travel to Amherst to take on Northeastern at 4 pm.
