Men's Swimming & Diving Defeats Williams for First Time at Wesleyan Quad Meet

Bowen collected two individual first place finishes at Wesleyan.

MEDFORD, Mass. – For the first time in program history the Tufts University men's swimming & diving team defeated Williams College in a dual meet at Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.

Tufts defeated three opponents in all during the action. In addition to the 161-154 victory over the Ephs, the Jumbos also had a 257-67 victory over the host Cardinals and a 187-134 win versus WPI. The event was the last of the fall semester for Tufts. Williams is the 15-time defending NESCAC champion, and has won 16 of the 17 conference titles since the event started in 2001.

The victory over Williams wasn't decided until the final event. The Jumbos won the 400-yard freestyle relay over the Ephs by a time of 3:07.30 to Williams' 3:10.44. Clinching the win for the Jumbos was the foursome of junior Kingsley Bowen, senior Zach Wallace, senior James McElduff and sophomore Roger Gu.

In the individual races, Bowen and Gu took home the most individual first place finishes for the Jumbos. Bowen won the 50 backstroke (23.73) and the 100 backstroke (50.78), while Gu took first in the 50 freestyle (20.66) and the 100 freestyle (46.15).

Freshman Jimmy Parker came in second behind Gu in the 50 freestyle with a 22.04. Wallace placed second in the 400 IM with a 4:10.75, while Bowen also had a runner-up performance in the 200 backstroke with a 1:53.79 time. McElduff added a second in the 200 fly, finishing in 1:54.06.

Two Jumbos finished in the top three in the 200 freestyle. Tyler Tatro took second (1:46.08) and Lorenzo Lau came in third (1:46.10).

In the diving portion of the competition, Aaron Idelson took first place in the three-meter dive with a score of 271.95. He was also the runner-up in the one-meter event with a 275.35 score.

Head coach Adam Hoyt's Jumbos were 5-0 in dual meet competitions for the first semester. Tufts will compete next at Boston College on Jan. 16.
