AMHERST, Mass. – The sixth seeded Tufts women's squash team downed 11th seeded Connecticut College, 9-0, in the opening round of the NESCAC Women's Squash Championship held at Amherst on Friday evening. The Jumbos advance to take on third seeded Middlebury on Saturday at 9:30 am.
With the win the Jumbos improve to 14-3 overall this season and advance to play in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. Middlebury, the Jumbos next opponent, had a first round bye and did not play on Friday.
Five of the Jumbos nine wins on the day came in just three games. Freshman Claire Davidson picked up a win over Mawa Ballo in the first position, 11-8, 11-5, 9-11, 11-1. In the second position, sophomore Hannah Burns allowed Davis Lemay to score just seven points across three games in a 11-1, 11-0, 11-6 win. Rookie Catherine Shanahan took the courts in the third position, and won over Margaret Davey in three games, 11-6, 14-12, 11-2. In the fourth position, sophomore Sahana Karthik was able to down Anne Holly, 11-7, 11-5, 11-4.
Junior Lauren Banner fell in extra points in the first game in the fifth position, but came back to beat Jacqueline Chu in four games, 10-12, 11-6, 11-6, 11-2. Sophomore Olivia Ladd-Luthringhauser took on Elizabeth Varoli in the sixth position, and won in three games, 11-5, 11-5, 11-3. Freshman Sahar Tirmizi won in three games over Allie Fuller in the seventh position, 11-6, 11-4, 11-5. In the eighth position, sophomore Chista Irani held Phoebe Pilakas to just 13 points across three games in her, 11-6, 11-5, 11-2, win. Rounding out the Jumbos lineup was sophomore Sinclair Meggitt, who won in four games over Caroline Lippincott in the ninth position, 11-6, 11-6, 8-11, 11-7.
The Jumbos and the Panthers face off at 9:30 am on Saturday with the winner advancing to take on the winner of the Williams and Bowdoin match at 3:30 pm in the conference tournament semifinals.
