Men's Lacrosse Builds Big Early Lead, Cruises to 18-10 Win over Endicott

Box Score

MEDFORD - Sophomore Danny Murphy figured in nine goals with seven tallies and two assists all in the first half to lead the third-ranked Tufts University men's lacrosse team to an 18-10 win over visiting Endicott College on Sunday afternoon at Bello Field.

Danny Murphy scored or set up more than half of Tufts' 14 goals in the first two quarters

The Jumbos (4-0) built leads of 8-2 after one quarter and 14-4 at the half. Seniors Michael Mattson and Zach Richman both added three goals apiece, though Tufts would actually lower its scoring average to 19.25 goals per game with today's output.

Endicott, which dropped to 0-4 on the season, was led by five goals and two assists from sophomore Dylan McManus.

Tufts sophomore Henry Hollen won the first two face-offs of the game and the Jumbos scored goals by Murphy and sophomore Luke Kurtz assisted by Murphy in the first minute to set the tone. They led 5-0 just three minutes in on another goal by Murphy.

Endicott stopped the run with McManus' man-up goal at 10:55 of the first, but the Jumbos netted the next three and led 8-1 after sophomore Nick Katz scored at 3:19 of the first quarter. Chris Reilly scored for Endicott to finish the first, but the Jumbos opened the second with four in a row to lead 12-2 at the 7:34 mark. Mattson had back-to-back goals exactly a minute apart during that run. Senior Will Jennings scored twice for the Gulls late in the second, but the Jumbos took a 10-goal lead into a 35-minute halftime intermission forced by the cold temperature.

The Gulls showed some life coming out of the break, getting consecutive goals quickly from Jennings and McManus to pull within 14-6. However, that was short-lived as Tufts scored three of the next four goals and led 17-7 after three. Junior Andrew Seiter had two assists in the quarter for Tufts.

McManus finished his seven-point day for Endicott with two goals in the fourth period. Senior Nico Pollack finished the Tufts scoring with a man-up goal during the frame.

The Jumbos nearly doubled Endicott in shot attempts 71-37 and took a 36-29 count in groundballs. They hit on three of four man-up opportunities. Sophomore Arend Broekmate and freshman Jack Donohue both caused two turnovers for Tufts. The Jumbos played three goalies, with junor Robert Treiber making the most of the team's 13 saves with eight in 25 second-half minutes.

Jennings nearly matched McManus in points for the Gulls with three goals and three assists. Endicott senior Tommy Hughes won 15 face-offs and picked up 10 groundballs in the game. Sophomore defenseman Grant Garrity had four groundballs and caused a turnover. Junior goalie Grant Thompson stopped 13 of the 17 shots he saw in the second half.

The Jumbos travel to Colby for NESCAC play next Saturday. Endicott is right back at it on Tuesday with non-league action at Bates.
