CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 14 Tufts University men's tennis team improved to 4-1 during the 2017 season with a 6-3 victory over NESCAC Conference-rival Colby on Wednesday, as the Jumbos went 4-2 in singles and 2-1 during doubles action in Claremont, California.

The Jumbos and the 37th-ranked Mules were ready for action, as three of the six singles' matches went three sets. The Mules earned three-set victories in No. 1 and 2 singles, as senior Carl Reid defeated junior Rohan Gupte, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, and then senior Vlad Murad outlasted junior Zain Ali, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
The Jumbos claimed the remaining four singles' matches, as junior Danny Coran posted a straight-set victory, 6-4, 7-6 (6), over freshman Scott Altmeyer during No. 3 singles. Freshman Nathan Niemiec and senior captain Kevin Kelly followed Coran's lead in No. 4 and 5 singles, respectively, as Niemiec won against freshman Zale Shah, 6-3, 7-5, and then Kelly cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over junior Shaw Speer.
Sophomore Ethan Chen showed resiliency, as he dropped his first set in No. 6 singles, 3-6, to senior Cam Hillier, and then rebounded with a 6-0 win in the second set and a 6-3 triumph in the do-or-die third set.
Junior Griffin Brockman and Gupte were up to the challenge in No. 1 doubles, as the pair outlasted Murad and Reid in a 16-game set, 9-7. Freshman Zach Shaff and senior captain Ben Battle took down Altmeyer and Shah, 8-4, during No. 2 doubles.
The Mules recorded an 8-5 win in No. 3 doubles, as Speer and Hillier outperformed Ali and freshman Benjamin Biswas.
The Jumbos will have a little time to rest, as the squad will be back in action on Friday at No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer in Claremont, California.
