No. 12 Women's Tennis Outlasts No. 6 University of Chicago, 6-3, on Thursday in California

CLAREMONT, Calif. – This was a statement win.

The No. 12 Tufts University women's tennis team defeated No. 6 University of Chicago, 6-3, on Thursday in Claremont California, as the Jumbos improved to 4-0 during the 2017 season.

Mina Karamercan was victorious in singles and doubles action.

The Jumbos went 3-0 during doubles action and 3-3 on the singles side. Junior Lauren Louks and sophomore Mina Karamercan are use to competing against top-caliber competition, as the pair outlasted freshman Marjorie Antohi and sophomore Rachel Kim, 8-6, during No. 1 doubles.

Freshman Katherine Wiley clinched the match for the Jumbos during No. 4 singles, as she fought her way to a 7-6 (9) first-set win, and then cruised to a 6-0 triumph during the second set against senior Tiffany Chen.

Wiley and sophomore Otilia Popa, who have gone 4-0 together in doubles action during the 2017 season, held down the fort in No. 2 doubles, defeating freshman Alyssa Rudin and Chen, 8-3. In No. 3 doubles, senior captain Conner Calabro and sophomore Tomo Iwasaki downed freshman Estefania Navarro and junior Ariana Iranpour, 8-4.

Iranpour rebounded for the Maroons in No. 1 singles, defeating Louks, 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (4), and then Karamercan posted a straight-set victory, 6-4, 6-1, over Antohi during No. 2 singles.

Kim performed well in the clutch during No. 3 singles, claiming a 7-6 (5) victory in the first set, and then recording a narrow 7-5 triumph in second-set action against Iwasaki.

Calabro recorded a 6-2 first-set win in No. 5 singles against Navarro. Navarro extended the match with a 6-4 victory in the second set, but then Calabro rose up to the challenge, earning a 6-2 victory in the must-win third set.

Keller tried to mount a comeback in No. 6 singles, as posted a commanding 6-1 second-set victory after losing, 6-2, in the opening set to Rudin. Rudin tallied a 6-3 win in the decisive third set.

The Jumbos will conclude their spring-break trip with a matchup at No. 4 Pomona-Pitzer on Friday in Claremont, California.
