Second-Ranked Tufts Men's Lacrosse Earns 22-9 NESCAC Win Over Trinity

MEDFORD - Thirteen players scored goals, including eight with two or more, as the #2 Tufts University men's lacrosse team remained unbeaten (7-0) with a 22-9 win over Trinity College at Bello Field on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Lucas Johnson scored three times to lead Tufts, while junior Andrew Seiter, freshman Nick Shanks, sophomore Nick Katz, senior co-captain Tucker Mathers, junior Nico Pollack, senior Zach Richman and sophomore Ben Connelly all tallied twice for the Jumbos. Tufts improved to 3-0 in NESCAC.

Sophomore Teddy Myers led the Bantams with three points on two goals and an assist. Junior Jack Stallman scored twice for Trinity (2-4, 0-4 NESCAC), while freshman Garrett Hansen finished with a goal and an assist.

The Jumbos started at better than a goal per minute pace, buiding a 5-0 lead just 4:17 into the game. Katz had back-to-back goals capping that run. Sophomore Henry Hollen won all five face-offs for the Jumbos leading to the goals.

Trinity prevented an early run-away as Myers scored assisted by Max Herman at 6:07 of the first making it 5-1. A face-off win by Scott Morgan led to a Stallman goal just 32 seconds later, then the Bantams closed to within 5-3 on a Myers strike at 1:10 of the first.

However, Tufts would shut out Trinity in the second quarter while scoring six of their own. Sophomore Danny Murphy assisted on four straight goals during the period, while Richman scored twice. The quarter also included a long-stick goal by Mathers and the first career goal by Shanks as Tufts took an 11-3 lead into halftime.

In all, the Jumbos would pour in 11 straight goals capped by a man-up tally from junior Andrew Seiter at 8:48 of the third quarter giving Tufts a 16-3 advantage. The Jumbos would finish the game five for five on extra-man opportunities. The first career goal by sophomore William Pasik put the hosts up 18-5 after three.

Tufts would lead by as many as 15 goals (20-5) following one by Pollack at 10:53 of the fourth quarter. 

The Bantams scored back-to-back goals by Jack Sharrio and Hansen in the middle of the fourth, and then did it again with Jack Walsh and Morty Fearey scoring 18 seconds apart late in the quarter. Tufts' Fitz Reese closed the scoring with his first collegiate goal.

Both teams played four goalies, with Tufts' Ben Shmerler earning the win with four saves in 30 minutes. Trinity's Woody Hamilton took the loss, stopping six shots in the first half. Bantam goalies combined for 16 saves while Tufts' had nine.

Hollen was immense for Tufts, winning 20 of 25 face-offs. On Trinity's side, sophomore Alex Notman picked up three groundballs.

The Jumbos finished with a 70-33 advantage in shots and 39-20 in groundballs. They held Trinity to 0 for 6 on man-advantages.

Tufts remains at home to host Western New England on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Trinity plays at Babson on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
