No. 7 Women's Tennis Opens NESCAC Conference Action with 8-1 Triumph over Bates Saturday

LEWISTON, Maine – Sophomore Mina Karamercan of the No. 7 Tufts University women's tennis team improved to 3-0 in No. 1 singles during the 2017 spring season, as the Jumbos cruised to an 8-1 victory over Bates on Saturday in Lewiston, Maine.

Otilia Popa was victorious in No. 2 doubles for the Jumbos Saturday.

The Jumbos (6-1, 1-0 in NESCAC) defeated the Bobcats (3-8, 1-2 in NESCAC) in all six singles matches and two out of three doubles matches.

Karamercan, who has competed in No. 1 or 2 singles in every match this season, improved to 6-1 in singles-oriented matches, as she downed junior Maisie Silverman, 7-6 (5), 6-2, during No. 1 singles. The sophomore standout's sensational performance during No. 1 singles clinched the match for the Jumbos.

Junior Lauren Louks followed suit during No. 2 singles, as she posted a 6-3 victory over senior Elizabeth Erbafina in first-set action. The Malibu, California, native then posted a convincing 6-1 victory during the second set for a straight-set victory.

Sophomore Tomo Iwasaki outperformed sophomore Bella Stone, 6-3, during the first set in No. 3 singles, and then prevailed in second-set action with a hard-fought 7-5 win.

Freshman Katherine Wiley continues to rise to the occasion for the Jumbos, as she improved to 6-1 in singles matches with a straight-set triumph, 7-5, 6-4, against freshman Isabelle Rovinski during No. 4 singles.

Senior captain Alexa Meltzer and senior Kate Rosenthal were going back and fourth during No. 5 singles, as the score was sitting at 6-6 (5-1) during opening-set action, but Meltzer was awarded the victory because Rosenthal was unable to continue competing due to an injury.

Senior captain Conner Calabro did not allow senior Olivia Voccola to hang around during No. 6 singles, as Calabro won the first set, 6-1, and the second set, 6-2.

Silverman and Stone were the complete package during No. 1 doubles for the Bobcats, as the pair defeated Karamercan and Wiley, 8-6. Louks and sophomore Otilia Popa responded for the Jumbos with a strong performance during No. 2 doubles, as the duo outlasted Erbafina and Rovinski, 8-5.

Calabro and Iwasaki were nearly flawless during No. 3 doubles, as the women defeated Rosenthal and freshman Lauren Hernandez, 8-1.
