MEDFORD, Mass. – The No. 7 Tufts University women's tennis team dominated singles action on Tuesday, as the Jumbos went 6-0 on the individual side during a 7-2 win over No. 21 MIT in Medford, Massachusetts.
Freshman Katherine Wiley was victorious in singles and doubles action for the Jumbos (9-2, 2-1 in NESCAC), and senior Chelsea Hayashi clinched the match for the hosts with a win during No. 6 singles.
The Engineers (11-5, 8-0 in NEWMAC) opened up with back-to-back wins in doubles action, as freshman Effie Jia and junior Rena Liu outlasted senior captain Conner Calabro and sophomore Tomo Iwasaki, 9-7, at the No. 3 slot.
Sophomore Kelly Zhu and junior Dora Tzeng continued the momentum for the visitors with an 8-6 victory over junior Lauren Louks and sophomore Mina Karamercan at the top slot.
The Jumbos responded emphatically, by winning the final seven events, starting with an 8-6 triumph by Wiley and sophomore Otilia Popa against freshman Serena Lee and junior Sonya Das during the No. 2 flight.
Karamercan opened up singles action with a bang, outperforming Tzeng in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Karamercan is now 6-1 during the 2017 spring season in the No. 1 slot on the individual side.
Senior captain Alexa Meltzer improved to 7-2 in singles action, downing Le, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4 singles, while Wiley followed up with a straight-set triumph, 6-3, 6-3, over Das at the No. 3 slot. Hayashi's match-clinching performance was a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Liu.
Calabro tallied her ninth win in 10 matches in singles-oriented matches, as she posted a commanding 6-0 victory during first-set action against freshman Sharlene Song at the No. 5 slot. The Sherman Oaks, California, native then performed well under pressure during the second set, outlasting Song, 7-6 (7).
Louks put a stamp on the Jumbos' perfect performance on the singles side, as she rebounded from a 6-3 setback to Zhu during the first set of No. 2 singles, and won the second, 6-1, and the decisive third, 6-2.
The Jumbos will look to continue flourishing on their home court with a huge test against No. 1 Emory on Friday at 1 p.m. in Medford, Massachusetts.
