No. 1 Emory University Picks up 7-2 Win on the Road over No. 7 Women's Tennis Friday

MEDFORD, Mass. – Sophomore Mina Karamercan of the No. 7 Tufts University women's tennis team defeated top-ranked Bridget Harding of Emory University in No. 1 singles, but the top-ranked Eagles defeated the Jumbos, 7-2, on Friday at Voute Courts in Medford, Massachusetts.

Alexa Meltzer earned a victory during No. 5 singles for the Jumbos.

Senior Paula Castro clinched the match for the Eagles (8-4) during No. 6 singles, besting senior captain Conner Calabro, 6-2, 6-2. The Eagles opened the match win six consecutive victories, but the Jumbos (9-3, 2-1 in NESCAC) responded by winning two of the final three events.

There was a great brand of tennis being played during the three doubles flights, as each one was a close battle. Senior Michelle DeMeo and Castro opened up the match from the No. 3 slot, outdoing Calabro and sophomore Tomo Iwasaki, 8-6.

Junior Lauren Louks and Karamercan formed the Jumbos' top pair, but the two were defeated by Harding and senior Katarina Su, 8-5. Freshman Katherine Wiley and sophomore Otilia Popa left it all on the court for the hosts during the No. 2 flight, but the pair of senior Michelle Satterfield and sophomore Daniela Lopez came through in the clutch, claiming a narrow 9-7 triumph.

Lopez opened up singles action with a straight-set victory, 6-4, 6-0, over Iwasaki at the No. 3 slot. Su and Wiley met during the No. 4 slot, as Su won the first and second set by the score of 6-1.

Senior captain Alexa Meltzer tallied the first win for the Jumbos on Friday, downing senior Melissa Goodman, 6-4, 6-1, during No. 5 singles. Meltzer continues to be a consistent presence for the Jumbos on the individual side, as she is 8-2 during the 2017 season in singles matches.

Satterfield was victorious over Louks at the No. 2 slot, as the Paradise Valley, Arizona, native posted a 6-3, 6-2 sweep.

Karamercan ended the match with an impressive 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Harding at the No. 1 slot. The Istanbul, Turkey, native improved to 7-1 in the spring season, operating out of the top slot, as she is also 10-2 overall in singles matches during 2017.

The Jumbos will be back in action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. matchup against NESCAC Conference-rival and sixth-ranked Wesleyan (Conn.) in Medford, Massachusetts.
