LEWISTON, ME - The Bates College women's squash team won its third match in a row with a 7-2 final over Tufts University in a NESCAC match on Friday night.
The Bobcats, ranked #24 in this week's College Squash Association poll, are on the rise after a slow start as they improved to a 5-5 record. The Jumbos, #17 in the national poll, last their second in a row to fall to 9-4.
Bates took six of their seven victories in three games. The most competitive of those matches were at #4 and #6. In the fourth, Bobcat Eliza Dunham defeated Tufts' Hannah Burns 15-13, 11-6, 11-8. In the sixth match, Bates' Katherine Manternach was a 13-11, 11-8, 11-8 winner against Jumbo freshman Rachel Windreich.
The tightest match overall came at #2 between Victoria Arjoon of Bates and sophomore Claire Davidson of Tufts. Davidson won the first game 11-9 before Arjoon rallied for 11-6 and 11-4 wins. Davidson staved off elimination with an 11-4 final in the fourth game, but the Bobcat prevailed in a closely contested 13-11 fifth to take the match.
Tufts' two wins came in the seventh and eighth spots. Junior Sahana Karthik built a 2-0 lead before losing the third game, but closed out an 11-9, 11-5, 9-11, 11-6 win at #7. Senior Lauren Banner dominated in the eighth position, winning 11-2, 11-3, 11-3.
The Jumbos cotinue their conference road trip to Maine with a match at #26 Bowdoin College tomorrow. The Bobcats host Franklin & Marshall and Brown on Saturday.
