MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The No. 19 Tufts women's squash team traveled up to No. 15 Middlebury on Saturday afternoon, but it was the Panthers that came away with a 9-0 win.
The setback was the first of the season for the Jumbos, who are now 2-1. The match was Middlebury's first of the season.
Junior Claire Davidson played a tough match with Beatrijs Kuijpers in the first position. Kuijpers won the first game, 11-9, before Davdison took the second in extra points, 13-11. The Panther won the third game, 12-10 and then Davidson picked up an 11-6 win in the fourth game. The fifth game was just as close, but Kuijper managed a 15-13 win.
Sophomore Julie Yeung won the third game in the second position, but she wasn't able to win over Ideal Dowling (11-4, 11-3, 10-12, 11-2). In the third position senior Zarena Jafry won the first game, but wasn't able to hold on, falling to Alexa Comai, 9-11, 11-5, 11-2, 11-4. Freshman Megan Chen also took the first game from her Middlebury opponent in the fifth position. But, Emily Beinkampen battled back to pick up the four game win, 7-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-9.
In the eighth spot senior Sahana Karthik won the second game, but wasn't able to pick up a win over Natasha Lowitt, falling, 11-3, 8-11, 11-6, 11-5. Sophomore Chloe Kantor also took a game from her Panther opponent, winning the first game in the ninth position. But, Mira Chugh came back to win in four games, 10-12, 11-3, 11-2, 11-4.
Sophomore Rachel Windreich and senior Hannah Burns rounded out the Jumbos lineup in the fourth and sixth positions, respectively. Both Jumbos fell to their Middlebury counterparts in three games.
The Jumbos will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to Williams for a 3 pm start with the Ephs. Middlebury plays again next Saturday when they travel to Wesleyan for a 3 pm start with the Cardinals.
