CLINTON, N.Y. – The fifth-seeded Tufts women's squash team split the day at the NESCAC Squash Championships at Hamilton College. The Jumbos fell to fourth-seeded Amherst, 7-2, and then topped Hamilton in consolation bracket play.
After the split the Jumbos are now 12-5 overall this year.
The day started with a 7-2 setback to Amherst. Freshman Julie Yeung picked up a three game win over Haley McAtee in the first position, 11-5, 11-8, 11-5. In the third position, junior Zarena Jafry won a hard fought battle with Rachel Ang. Jafry won the first two games, the second in extra points, before Ang came back and won the next two. Jafry was able to win the fifth game, 11-5, to pick up the win for the Jumbos (11-4, 12-10, 9-11, 8-11, 11-5).
In the second position sophomore Claire Davidson won the first game, but wasn't able to finish it off, falling in five games to Kimberly Krayacich. Junior Hannah Burns faced off with C Conway in the fourth position but fell in three games. In the fifth position, sophomore Catherine Shanahan wasn't able to beat R Samput, 11-7, 11-8, 11-0. Freshman Rachel Windreich won the second game in the sixth position, but she wasn't able to top M Chen, 11-3, 7-11, 11-4, 11-4.
In the seventh position, junior Sahana Karthik fell to K Correia, 11-5, 11-5, 11-5. Senior Lauren Banner faced off with P Klein in the eight position, but wasn't able to pull out the win (11-4, 11-4, 11-6). Rounding out the Jumbos lineup in the ninth position was freshman Chloe Kantor who won the first game in extra points, 18-16, but fell in the next three (16-18, 11-3, 11-8, 11-5).
After the setback the Jumbos took on eighth seeded Hamilton in consolation bracket play. Yeung dropped the first game in the first position, but then came back to win the next three over Rafiatou Ouro-Aguy, 6-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-6. In the second position Davidson picked up a win over Charlotte Zonis, 11-7, 12-10, 11-7. Jafry took the courts again in the third position, and won a four game battle with Megan Grip, 11-3, 11-6, 6-11, 11-7, for her second win of the day. In the fourth position Burns also went four games with Grace Munschauer, winning 11-9, 11-6, 8-11, 11-6.
Shanahan went four games with Caitlin Stern in the fifth position, picking up the 11-4, 9-11, 11-5, 11-7 win. Windreich battled Katherine Bauer in the sixth spot, and own in three games, 11-4, 11-9, 11-6. Karthik picked up a three game win over Liesl Guenther in the seventh position, 11-2, 11-4, 13-11. Kantor picked up the last Jumbo win, downing Danielle Reisley in the ninth position, 11-6, 11-7, 11-2.
Senior Lauren Banner dueled Marina Hartnick in the eighth position, but wasn't able to pull out the win falling 11-5, 2-11, 11-8, 11-4.
The Jumbos are back in action tomorrow with a consolation match against the winner of the match between Wesleyan and Bates with an 11 am start time.
