CLINTON, N.Y. – The fifth-seeded Tufts women's squash team fell to sixth-seeded Bates in consolation bracket play on Sunday morning. The match wrapped up play in the NESCAC Championships for the Jumbos.
The loss moves the Jumbos record to 12-6 overall this year. They began play in the NESCAC Tournament with a 7-2 setback against Amherst. They then topped Hamilton in consolation bracket play before falling to the Bobcats on Sunday.
The Bobcats won in the first six positions, with the Jumbos wins coming from positions seven through nine. Senior Lauren banner easily dealt Hannah Conner a three game loss in the seventh position, 11-4, 11-3, 11-3. In the eighth position junior Sinclair Meggitt fell in the first game in extra points but came back to beat Katie Bull, 10-12, 11-4, 11-0, 6-11, 11-7. The last Jumbo win came from senior Gabi Solomon, who needed just three games to beat Cata Robert, 11-3, 11-5, 12-10.
Junior Hannah Burns played the closest match of the Jumbos that fell. She won the second game against Vicky Arjoon in the second position, but wasn't able to pull out any others, falling 11-5, 9-11, 11-6, 11-9. In the first position sophomore Claire Davidson fell to Luca Polgar, 11-8, 11-2, 11-7. Taking the courts in the third position was sophomore Catherine Shanahan, but she wasn't able to beat Kristyna Alexova, 11-7, 11-7, 11-8.
Junior Sahana Karthik played three close games in the fourth position, with the third going to extra points, but she wasn't able to top Eliza Dunham, 11-8, 11-7, 15-13. Rachel Windreich took the courts in the sixth position for the Jumbos but she fell to Katie Manternach, 11-7, 11-8, 11-5.
The Jumbos are back in action on Saturday when they host Boston University for a 2 pm start at the Belmont Hill School.
