Box Score MEDFORD, Mass. – The Tufts University women's lacrosse team lost their first game of the season Wednesday night, 11-8, against Washington and Lee in Lexington, Va.

The Jumbos (4-1) got out to a 5-1 lead in the first half, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Generals (4-4) who went on to outscore Tufts 6-2 in the second half. Catherine Lawliss and Caroline Nowak each had two goals for the Jumbos, while Cecily Freliech and Dakota Adamec both had a goal and an assist. Annie Sullivan, Margaret Chase, Maddie Norman, and Gabby Vinci all picked up a point as well.
Dani Murray led the way for Washington and Lee, recording three goals and three assists and winning four draw controls. Alex Meyer also had three goals for the Generals and Jess Castelo had two. Elliot Gilbert was huge in net for Washington and Lee, as she made 15 saves and kept the Jumbos 1-for-14 on free position shots.
With ten minutes to go in the game, Adamec Tufts' first and only free position shot goal of the game to draw within one of the Generals at 9-8. The Jumbos had a couple good looks following Adamec's goal, but weren't able to put any in the back of the net.
After a card on Tufts, Mimi MacCowatt was able to add an insurance goal for the Generals with just under four minutes to play. The Jumbos pressed Washington and Lee for the remainder of the game in an attempt to force a turnover, but with thirty seconds left, Murray found an open Meyer a few feet yards in front of the Jumbos' goal who turned and fired the final dagger to finish the game.
Audrey Evers played admirably in net for Tufts, making six saves on the day. The Jumbos had the advantage in draw controls, 13-8, with Lily Baldwin winning a game-high five and Adamec grabbing four, but they just weren't able to turn enough into goals.
Hedy Veith was a bright spot for Tufts on defense, picking up four ground balls and causing a game-high three turnovers.
After going up 5-1 in the first half off of goals from Norman, Nowak, Sullivan, and Freliech, the Generals would end the half on a 4-1 run to go into the break with Tufts ahead, 6-5. They continued that run in the second half to go up 9-6 on the Jumbos. After that, Tufts was never able to regain the lead.
Up next for Tufts will be a home contest against No. 4 Trinity (Conn.) in a NESCAC matchup on Saturday. Washington and Lee will travel to Virginia Wesleyan on the same day.
