MEDFORD - The sixth-ranked Tufts University women's tennis team returned to action after their California spring break trip with a strong showing at home against #29 Trinity, winning 9-0. The match, which evened Tufts' NESCAC record at 1-1, and was played on Thursday afternoon outdoors at Voute Courts.
Tomo Iwasaki and Julia Keller opened the scoring in #1 doubles for the Jumbos (4-2), beating Bantams Ania Aliev and Lily Everett 8-2. Mina Karamercan and Otilia Popa followed with an 8-2 victory of their own in #2 doubles, besting Julia Brogan and Jillian Winer. Tufts swept the doubles matchups after Kat Wiley and Kiara Rose took down Morgan Wilkins and Krista Jiranek 8-3 in #3 doubles.
Lauren Louks continued the Jumbos' success in #2 singles, sweeping Trinity's Jiranek 6-0, 6-0. Karamercan, #21 in the ITA rankings, followed up her doubles contribution with a 6-0, 6-0 showing in #1 singles against Trinity's Brogan. That officially clinched the victory for the hosts.
Keller advanced past Aliev in the #4 singles match, 6-2, 6-2. Wiley had a strong showing in #3 singles, defeating Winer 6-2, 6-2. Rose added to her previous doubles success with a 6-2, 6-1 over the Bantams' Everett in #5 singles. Jumbos' sophomore Afua Ofori-Darko completed the dominant overall showing for Tufts, winning 6-1, 6-2 over Trinity's Wilkins.
The Jumbos return to action on Saturday, when they play at #21 Brandeis at 9:00 a.m. They will also face #28 Bates later that afternoon at home, with a 2:00 p.m start. Trinity (3-4, 0-1 NESCAC) is off until April 7 when they face Colby.
