MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The #6 Tufts University women's tennis team fell to fifth-ranked NESCAC opponent Wesleyan, 6-3. The match was one of two on the weekend for the Jumbo women's tennis team, and was played on Saturday afternoon in Middletown.
Wesleyan kicked things off with a victory in No. 3 doubles, with Nicole McCann and Helen Klass-Warch taking down Jumbos pair Tomo Iwasaki and Julia Keller 8-3. Tufts responded in the No. 2 match, as Patricia Obeid and Lauren Louks defeated Polina Kiseleva and Alissa Nakamoto 8-2 to even the match at 1-1.
Eudice Chong and Victoria Yu gave the Cardinals a 2-1 doubles advantage after the No. 1 contest, earning an 8-5 victory over Mina Karamercan and Otilia Popa.
Chong, the #1 singles player in the ITA rankings, was up 4-0 at No. 1 singles before Obeid retired in a shortened match. Kiseleva then bested Iwasaki in the No. 4 match, 6-1, 6-2. Nakamoto clinched the Wesleyan win at No. 5, taking down Zoe Miller 6-2, 6-2.
Klass-Warch earned her second victory of the afternoon with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Tufts' Kiara Rose in the No. 6 tilt.
The Jumbos finished off strong with a pair of victories in the No. 3 and 2 matches. Louks extended a personal three-match win streak in singles play, beating Cardinals senior Aashli Budhiraja 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3. Karamercan, #21 in ITA rankings, lost the first set but battled back at No. 2, taking down Yu 2-6, 6-2, 10-5.
Tufts is back in action tomorrow afternoon, traveling to take on NESCAC foe Hamilton at 1:30 p.m. Wesleyan's next match is against Bates on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
