MEDFORD - The #18 Tufts University men's tennis team bounced back from a loss yesterday to beat NESCAC opponent Colby on Sunday, 7-2. The match wrapped up the spring regular season action for both teams, and was played at the Gantcher Center in Medford.
The Jumbos earned a 3-0 edge after doubles play and kept their momentum going in singles play to get the victory. Boris Sorkin and Carl-Herman Grant took down Mules duo Scott Altmeyer and Sumukh Pathi in the No. 1 doubles match, 9-7.
Tufts pair Nathan Niemiec and Zach Shaff got an 8-5 win over Jeremy Mendoza and Luis Gonzalez Kompalic at No. 2. Ethan Bershtein and Ben Biswas gave the Jumbos an 8-4 victory at No. 3 over Colby's Shaw Speer and Garrett Reiter.
The Jumbos' strong play continued in singles, as they took four of the six matches. Sorkin picked up his second win of the afternoon at No. 1, taking down Altmeyer 6-1, 6-2. Grant earned a second win of his own at No. 2, dispatching Pathi 6-3, 6-3.
Colby picked up their two wins of the day in the No. 3 and No. 4 matches. Reiter bested Shaff 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3, and Speer used three sets to beat Danny Coran 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4.
Biswas earned a lengthy victory at No. 5 over Mendoza, using three sets to get a 7-6, 3-6, 10-6 win. Tufts senior co-captain Justin Brogan earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Colby's Jonathan Hallal at No. 6.
Ben Battle, Brogan and Coran were honored on Seniors Day for the Jumbos.
The match marked the end of regular season play for both teams. Tufts finished 10-6 with a 3-6 record in NESCAC. Colby is 8-7 overall and 3-6 in the league.
