No. 3 Men's Lacrosse Uses Strong Second Quarter to Put Away No. 4 Wesleyan

Box Score

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Tufts University men's lacrosse team used a big second quarter to distance themselves from and eventually beat Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon at Bello Field.

Treiber had a career-high five points (two goals, three assists) in the win Saturday.

The Jumbos (9-0, 6-0 NESCAC) outscored the Cardinals (8-2, 5-1 NESCAC) 4-0 in the second quarter to build a lead that they would never give up, earning the victory by a score of 14-10.

Danny Murphy paced Tufts with seven points coming from two goals and five assists. The seven points tied a season-high for Murphy who picked up a ground ball as well in the game. Ben Connelly scored four goals and Andrew Seiter had three. Matt Treiber scored twice and picked up three assists, while Frank Hattler had one goal and two assists. Garrett Samuelson and Cam Irwin both scored one and Griffin Johnson recorded two assists. Connor Lansdale and Arend Broekmate each caused two turnovers on defense and Henry Hollen led the way with seven ground balls.

Three Cardinals combined for all of the team's goals with Harry Stanton tallying four as Taylor Ghesquiere and Ronan Jacoby both had three. Ghesquiere also picked up an assist on the day. Cole Turpin and Carter Hawthorne each assisted twice and Ryan Flippin and Zach Zavalick both did so once. Colin Malarchuk led the way with two caused turnovers and Zach Zavalick had seven ground balls. Zavalick was also impressive on face offs, winning 12-of-21.

The first quarter was tightly contested as the teams traded goals to begin the game. Wesleyan struck first less than a minute in as Stanton hit a turnaround shot from the goalie's right. Connelly immediately answered for Tufts scoring the next two goals in a row. Stanton would score two more times in the quarter for the Cardinals and so would Jumbos Seiter and Irwin to go into the second with the score knotted at four.

Tufts' defense in the second quarter was as lock-down as they come allowing zero goals for the entire 15 minutes. On the other end, Samuelson, Connelly, Treiber, and Hattler all scored to build the Jumbos an 8-4 halftime lead.

The teams played to a 6-6 tie in the second half with the Cardinals never getting closer than down four. Tufts outscored Wesleyan 3-2 in the third quarter, only to be outscored by the visitors 4-3 in the fourth and final frame.

The score could have been a lot more lopsided if it wasn't for the play of Cardinal goalie Otto Bohan who made 18 saves, many of which had looked destined to find the back of the net. Mason Pollack played admirably for the Jumbos as well, making nine saves.

Wesleyan struggled on their man up opportunities, going 0-for-6 on the day. Tufts went 2-for-6. The Jumbos also held the advantage in shots, 45-38, and ground balls, 34-27.

Tufts will play next on Tuesday at Endicott as the Cardinals will look to get back on track the same day at Trinity.
