WATERVILLE, Maine - The #6 Tufts women's tennis team fell to top-ranked Emory on Sunday morning, 6-3. The match was the first of two on the day for the Jumbos, and was played in Waterville on Colby's tennis courts.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick 2-0 advantage in doubles play. Anna Fuhr and Stephanie Taylor defeated Jumbos Lauren Louks and Patricia Obeid at No. 2, 8-3. Mina Karamercan and Otilia Popa jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the No. 1 match, but were ultimately outlasted by Emory's Bridget Harding and Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico, 8-6.
The Jumbos got on the board in the No. 3 doubles contest, as Zoe Miller and Kat Wiley won a 8-7 (1) match over Daniela Lopez and Katie Chang.
The Eagles' success continued in singles play. Gonzalez-Rico, #2 in ITA rankings, took down Obeid 6-3, 6-2. Tomo Iwasaki responded for Tufts at No. 4, coming from behind to beat Fuhr 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. That kept Tufts within one at a 3-2 team score.
Harding, #7 in ITA rankings, used three sets in the No. 2 tilt to defeat #21 Karamercan, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Taylor clinched the match for Emory in the No. 6 match, getting the better of Julia Keller 6-1, 6-0. Defne Olcay added to the Eagles' margin at No. 5, taking down Miller 6-3, 6-2.
Louks bounced back from an earlier doubles defeat in the No. 3 singles match, beating #28 Lopez 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 to finish the contest.
The Jumbos take on host Colby later this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Emory has a bit of time off before their next action at the University Athletic Association Championships, which will be played in Altamonte Springs, Florida between April 27-29.
