Fourth-Place Finish by Toland at National Single-handed Sailing Championship is Career Best

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Junior Talia Toland of the Tufts University sailing team finished fourth at the 2019 Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) / LaserPerformance Women's Singlehanded Championship on Sunday.

Toland had been fourth after Saturday's first day of races with a deficit of 21 points from third. Though she closed the margin on Sunday, she wasn't able to improve her placement.

Finishing with a score of 90, Toland was 14 behind third-place finisher Charlotte Rose of Jacksonville (76). Boston College's Sophia Reineke won the national championship for the second time with a 59 score, nine in front of runner-up Christina Sakellaris from Stanford (68).

Tufts sophomore Alexandra Talbot was also in action at the national championship and finished 14th out of the 18 total competitors with a 177 score.

A total of 14 races were contested over the weekend. After eight were held on Saturday, six more were finished on Sunday. Toland placed in the top half for five of the six races today including a third-place in the first race off the day. She also had a sixth and a fifth.

Talbot's ninth-place finish in the first race of the day was her Sunday-best.

In her second appearance at the ICSA singlehanded nationals, Toland improved upon her 12th-place finish from two years ago. She qualified for Nationals this year by winning the New England Singlehanded title on September 15. Talbot, sixth in New England to qualify nationally, was making her first national championship appearance.

The championship regatta was raced in the Santa Barbara Channel out of Santa Barbara Yacht Club.
