SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Junior Talia Toland of the Tufts University sailing team sits fourth out of 18 competitors following day one of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) LaserPerformance women's single-handed national championship on Saturday.

In eight races, Toland compiled scores totaling to 49. She is 21 behind third-place Christina Sakellaris from Stanford, who has a 28 score. Boston College's Sophia Reineke leads the competition with a 24 score and Charlotte Rose from Jacksonville is second (26).

Toland opened with two solid races of fourth- and second place. After dipping to 11th in the third race, she went 5-6-6-6 before finishing with a ninth-place.

Jumbo sophomore Alexandra Talbot is also competing at the single-handed national championship and is in 14th place with a 101 score. Her eighth and final race of the day was her best with an eighth-place finish.

Toland and Talbot qualified for Nationals with their performances at the New England Single-handed Championship. Toland won the New England title and Talbot was sixth to earn the final berth from the region.

The Jumbos are one of five teams nationally who qualified two sailors to compete for the singlehanded championship, including Boston College, Georgetown, Jacksonville and Stanford.

Toland has made one previous appearance at the national championship in 2017 when she placed 12th. Talbot is a first-time national qualifier.

The regatta is being held out of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club with racing in the Santa Barbara Channel.
