Defending National Champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Defeats Women's Tennis 9-0

Anna Lowy was part of a good Jumbo effort in third doubles.

CLAREMONT, Fla. – Defending national champion and #2 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps flexed its muscle with a 9-0 victory over eighth-ranked Tufts University in a women's tennis match played on Tuesday.

The Athenas improved to 11-1 overall while the Jumbos took their first loss of the spring and dropped to 2-1.

Third doubles was the most competitive of the opening matches as Tufts freshman Anna Lowy and junior Kat Wiley fell 8-6 to CMS junior Madison Shea and sophomore Rebecca Berger 8-6.

The Athenas won both #1 and #2 doubles by 8-1 scores.

In singles play, the hosts clinched the team victory with wins at #5 and #3 singles. On the fifth court, senior Jesse Cruz topped Tufts sophomore Kiara Rose 6-2, 6-0. In the decisive third match, sophomore Caroline Cox defeated Tufts sophomore Patricia Obeid 6-1, 6-1.

The Jumbos are off until Saturday when they play a NESCAC match against Williams College at Whittier College in California. The Athenas had another match against Babson later on Tuesday.
