MEDFORD – Playing their first dual match on campus of their 2018-19 season, the Tufts University women's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision to Bowdoin College in a NESCAC match Friday afternoon.
The action was moved indoors to the Gantcher Center due to light rain in the Medford area. With the victory, the Polar Bears improved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the league. Tufts fell to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in NESCAC.
The Polar Bears gained an advantage with sharp play in doubles, winning all three matches. The #1 pair of Devon Wolfe and Julia Marks were first off with an 8-3 victory. At third doubles, Bowdoin's Sasa Jovanovic and Fleming Landau also won by an 8-3 score. Tasha Christ and Izzy Essi finished the doubles sweep 8-4 at #2.
Tufts would get its first point of the match when senior Tomo Iwasaki defeated Christ 6-4, 6-2 in second singles. The hosts then closed within a point (3-2) due to a 6-3, 6-2 victory by sophomore #3 Patricia Obeid against Wolfe.
The guests were able to hold off Tufts though, as Essi won 7-5, 6-4 in fourth singles against freshman Caroline Garrido. Marks then clinched the match in a very competitive 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6) win at first singles over Jumbo freshman Maggie Dorr.
Bowdoin's Jovanovic at #5 (6-2, 7-5) and Landau at #6 (6-0, 6-4) won the final two matches remaining.
Tufts will host another NESCAC match on Sunday against Wesleyan University with a 3 pm start. The Polar Bears travel to Wesleyan tomorrow.
