Women's Tennis Falls 6-3 to Amherst in Final Regular-Season NESCAC Match

Freshman Anna Lowy was part of a third doubles win for Tufts.

AMHERST – Tied 2-2 after a win by freshman Caroline Garrido in fourth singles, the eighth-ranked Tufts University women's tennis team eventually fell 6-3 in a NESCAC match at seventh-ranked Amherst College on Wednesday afternoon.

Playing their final NESCAC contest of the regular-season, the Jumbos finished at 5-4 in the conference and are now 8-7 overall. Amherst improved to 10-3 overall and 4-2 NESCAC.

Tufts had an early 1-0 lead when freshman Anna Lowy with junior teammate Kat Wiley won 8-3 in third doubles. However, Amherst won the other two doubles sets. Jackie Bukzin and Kelsey Chen took an 8-5 final in the #1 match, then Camille Smukler with Anya Ivenitsky in second doubles were 8-5 winners.

Garrido stormed to a 6-4, 6-4 win over Amherst's Maggie Owensby in fourth singles to even the match score at 2-2. However, the Jumbos' momenthm was stopped by Smukler in second singles (6-2, 6-2), Bukzin in #1 singles (6-3, 6-1) and Claire Evans in fifth singles (6-4, 6-4) who won in succession to clinch the win for Amherst.

Sophomore Patricia Obeid scored Tufts' third win with a strong 6-4, 6-2 final over Maddie Dewire on the third singles court. The sixth and final set was determined by a super tie-breaker won by Amherst's Camilla Trapness 5-7, 6-3, 10-7.

The Jumbos play their final match of the regular-season on Friday when they host local rival MIT. The Mammoths travel for their regular-season and NESCAC finale on Saturday at Middlebury.
