LEWISTON, Maine – The 17th-ranked Bates College women's squash team edged #19 Tufts University in a NESCAC match between top 20 teams on Tuesday 6-3.
The host Bobcats (6-2) were able to take five of the seven matches that were decided in three sets. The teams split a pair of matches that went to five games.
Tufts junior Rachel Windreich went back and forth to win the #7 match over Bates' Victoria Haghighi. Scores were 2-11, 14-12, 11-9, 8-11, 11-5. The other five-set match was played at #4 with Bates' Katherine Manternach defeating Jumbo sophomore Megan Chen 11-6, 8-11, 11-5, 5-11, 11-5.
The Jumbos' two three-set wins came in the fifth and ninth spots. Sophomore Diya Sanghi won 11-9, 11-7, 11-7 at #5, while freshman Abhilasha Bhasin was an 11-3, 11-7, 11-8 winner in the ninth position.
Competitive matches were won by Bobcats at #3 and #8. Maeve O'Brien defeated Tufts senior co-captain Catherine Shanahan 11-3, 11-9, 12-10 on the third court, while Cordelia Dotson won 11-6, 11-7, 11-8 for the hosts over Natalie Bartlett in the eighth spot.
The #1 match went to Bates' Luca Polgar by 11-5, 11-4, 11-9 scores against Tufts senior co-captain Claire Davidson. The most decisive win of the match was earned by Bates' Erika Parker in the second position 11-4, 11-7, 11-5.
The Jumbos (4-4) play next on Saturday at Dickinson, which is whom the Bobcats will host tomorrow.
