WINCHESTER – The Tufts University men's tennis team defeated local rival Babson College 6-3 in a competitive non-conference match on Saturday at the Winchester Indoor Tennis Club. Tufts starts the spring ranked #18 nationally, while Babson is 37th.
The Jumbos split their squad on the opening day of their spring season Saturday. In addition to the win over the Beavers, Tufts also had a 9-0 conference victory at Connecticut College.
Against Babson, Tufts took a 2-1 lead after doubles. The #2 pair of sophomore Paris Pentousis with senior co-captain Ethan Bershtein were dominant with an 8-1 win. Tufts also had a victory in third doubles where senior Jason Scanlon teamed up with sophomore Jack Moldenhauer for an 8-6 victory. The #1 doubles contest went to a tie-breaker that was won by Babson's Maxwell Conlin and Markus Nordby 8-7 (7) against Tufts senior co-captain Boris Sorkin and freshman Josh Belandres.
Tufts took four of the six singles matches, with each victory by a significant margin. Jumbo wins went to sophomore Isaac Gorelik at #2 (6-1, 6-2), Pentousis in third singles (6-3, 6-3), Moldenhauer in the fourth match (6-2, 6-2) and Belandres in sixth singles (6-3, 6-2).
Nordby battled to a 7-6 (2), 2-6, 10-5 win over Sorkin in the top singles match. Babson's Conlin defeated Bershtein 7-5, 6-3 at #5.
Tufts is scheduled to face Swarthmore in Costa Mesa, California next Saturday. The Beavers (5-2) play Colby tomorrow.
