NEW LONDON, Conn. – The 11th-ranked Tufts University women's tennis team opened its spring season with an 8-1 NESCAC victory at Connecticut College on Saturday.
The Jumbos started the day by sweeping doubles. The #1 pair of sophomore Maggie Dorr and freshman Maddie Suk had an 8-3 win against Camels Brooke Scully and Meredith Kenny. In the #2 match, Jumbo sophomore Caroline Garrido paired with freshman Tilly Rigby for an 8-4 victory. The doubles sweep also included an 8-2 victory by freshman Casey Cummings and sophomore Anna Lowy in third doubles.
Tufts lost just six games in the second through fifth singles matches. Sophomore Nicki Frankel in second singles and Dorr in third singles both blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-0. Suk and junior Patricia Obeid won by identical 6-1, 6-2 scores in the fourth and fifth matches, respectively. Junior Kiara Rose took a competitive sixth match 3-6, 6-0, 10-7 over Kenny.
Tufts' only loss came in #1 singles where Tilly had to retire.
Head coach Kate Bayard's Jumbos are in action next Saturday versus Washington and Lee at the Mary Washington Blue-Gray Invitational. The Camels host Mount Holyoke tomororw morning.
