CLINTON, N.Y. - The Tufts University volleyball team opened up a weekend road trip in the league with a three-set victory at Hamilton College on Friday night. Set scores were 25-18, 25-16, 25-19.
The Jumbos improved to 3-1 in NESCAC and 9-3 overall. The host Continentals dropped to 1-2 in the conference and 5-3 overall. Tufts has now won 21 straight matches against Hamilton dating back to 2000.
Tufts finished the match with a strong .300 hitting percentage. Senior Cate Desler had 10 kills without an error in 19 attempts for a .526 percentage. Grace Legris checked in with seven kills and one error in 12 attempts (.500). Rileigh Farragher (pictured) scored the most points for Tufts with seven kills, three service aces and three block assists. Stephanie Lee's 15 digs led the visitors.
Twelve kills by Kate Carman led Hamilton. Melissa Morelli averaged 10 assists per set and Summer McClintic led with 14 digs. Drew Stimson went up for a solo block and two assists.
Down 6-1 early, Hamilton fought back to within 17-16 in the first set. However, the Jumbos got the next four points with kills by Maddie Yu, Farragher and Maya Lightfoot to lead 21-16 and eventually take the set.
Farragher's two kills and an ace led Tufts on a 7-1 run in the second set that brought a 10-10 tie to a 17-11 Jumbo lead. The Jumbos took the final point on a kill by Legris.
The Jumbos got kills from five different players to start the third set up 5-1 and were never really threatened from there. After three straight points by the Continental had made the score 23-19, a pair of attack errors by the hosts gave the Jumbos the last two points to clinch the match.
Tufts continues on to play at Williams College in conference action tomorrow at 2 pm. Hamilton will host Bowdoin College at noon and then Ithaca College at 4 pm on Saturday.
