Women's Soccer Shuts Out Little East's UMass Boston 3-0

Box Score

MEDFORD – The Tufts University women's soccer team defeated the UMass Boston Beacons by a score of 3-0 on Tuesday at Bello Field.

Tufts senior midfielder Stephanie DiLeo had two goals in the game, one coming just seven minutes into the game and the other coming in the 51st minute. Not long after, sophomore midfielder Casey Lam (pictured) added the third goal for Tufts in the 57th minute.

Tufts dominated the time of possession right away and got on the scoreboard early as DiLeo dribbled the ball on the right side of the box and sent a shot that went in off teammate Nic Sommers past the UMass Boston goalie Maria Spylios in the seventh minute.

The Jumbos would continue to create chances to score as junior Maddie Pero sent a shot in the 11th minute that was saved by Spylios. The best chance for Tufts that did not end up in the goal came in the 16th minute when Liz Reed had the ball in front of the net and sent a high shot off the crossbar. The ball bounced down directly in front of the net to the feet of three different players, but they could not find the back of the net. Reed would create another opportunity just two minutes later when she had the ball behind the defense on the left side of the field and dribbled close to the goal and fired a shot just wide right of the goal.

UMass Boston had their first good chance in the 24th minute with two corner kicks in a row. The first one found the head of freshman midfielder Maggie Kelley, but flew just wide right of the goal, deflecting off a Jumbo player. The second corner kick could not connect with any UMass Boston players and was cleared out by Tufts. Tufts' Lily Keiderling and Casey Lam had great chances before the end of the half, but Keiderling's hard shot sailed wide of the goal and Lam's shot was saved by Spylios.

The Jumbos started the second half similarly to their first half start. They immediately dominated the possession of the ball and scored an early goal just over six minutes into the half. The goal came when Tufts senior Lily Sykes had a corner kick and passed it to sophomore defender Olivia Patz near the corner. Patz crossed the ball all the way to the far post where DiLeo collected it and fired a shot into the back of the net to make it 2-0 Jumbos.

Just five minutes later, UMass Boston responded with one of their best chance of the night. Beacons senior midfielder Allie Crawford found herself all alone on the left side of the field with the ball and dribbled close to the box and sent a hard shot that sailed by the outstretched arms of a diving Kaelin Logue and just wide right of the goal. Tufts responded just over a minute later with a goal from Lam. She fired a rocket of a shot from outside of the box that went right by the goalie into the right corner of the net to give the Jumbos the 3-0 lead.

The Beacons got one more opportunity to score in the 72nd minute when they had a free kick from just outside the box. Senior Dani Anderson took the free kick and sent a hard shot towards the goal and it sailed just high of the crossbar. This came 11 minutes after Sykes had a deep free kick for the Jumbos that she fired at the net and hit the right post before it was cleared. There would not be any chances for the rest of the game as Tufts finished with the 3-0 victory.

Tufts (6-6) finished with 19 shots while UMass Boston (10-4-2) finished with seven. Tufts also led in corner kicks as the Jumbos had five and the Beacons had three. UMass Boston finished with eight saves compared to Tufts' two.

The game was played in memory of Madie Nicpon, the Tufts women's lacrosse player who passed away unexpectedly on October 16.

The Jumbos will now travel to Connecticut College on Saturday at 12 PM for a NESCAC matchup. UMass Boston will head to Western Connecticut State on that same day at 5 PM for a conference matchup.
